Best Practices: Solar Panel Photos for Roof Claim Inspections

The goal of these inspections is to provide high-quality, accurate photos and document key details about the solar panel system.

Capturing High-Quality Photos:

Walking the roofs:

Contractors must walk all roofs, including tile roofs, unless doing so is unsafe. Examples of unsafe conditions include wet or icy surfaces, a roof pitch steeper than 8/12, or any other hazard that makes the roof unsafe to walk.

Solar Panel Systems:

You must locate, evaluate, and thoroughly photograph the subpanel (including removing the cover/deadfront, if safe to do so), inverter units, listing labels, rapid shutdown equipment, and all associated wiring and disconnect switches.

Preparing to Perform the Inspection:

Before heading to the inspection, please ensure you have the following equipment:

  • Ladder (minimum 15 ft): Required to access and walk the roof when it is safe to do so.
  • Drone (last resort only): Use only to capture overhead photos if the roof is completely inaccessible or unsafe to walk.
